Gen. Gus Perna, the former commander of Army Materiel Command who was chosen to help lead the government’s effort to develop, produce and distribute a new COVID-19 vaccine, has retired.
Perna, who in July 2020 was confirmed by the Senate to be chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed, delayed his originally planned retirement from the Army to serve on the vaccine effort.
As the Army moves forward with its modernization priorities, the service’s sustainment enterprise is keeping up strategically and operationally by investing in new capabilities and improving existing ones, the Army’s senior sustainment officer said.
Informing the future of those sustainment capabilities will be lessons learned from the Army’s ongoing Project Convergence effort, which pairs soldiers with scientists in the field to test new capabilities.
The final day of Global Force Next, the Association of the U.S. Army’s three-day virtual conference, will feature a keynote address by Gen. Ed Daly, commanding general of Army Materiel Command.

The Portsmouth, Virginia, native was a 1958 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and commissioned as an infantry officer.
He retired from the Army in 1992 after 33 years of service. After his retirement, he served as board chairman of the Defense Acquisition University and a member of the LOGTECH Subject Matter Expert Board at the Institute for Defense and Business.
