An Association of the U.S. Army Book Program title has won a 2023 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award in its category.

Bipolar General: My Forever War with Mental Illness by retired Maj. Gen. Gregg Martin is recognized in the book category under Journals, Memoirs and Letters.

The Army Historical Foundation awards recognize “excellence in U.S. Army history writing.” The 2023 awards honor books and articles published in 2023.

The award for Bipolar General was announced just days after AUSA announced that retired Col. Daniel Roper, the association’s National Security Studies director, won an Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award in the article category under Journals and Magazines.

Roper is being recognized for his article, “Message From Mogadishu: Memo Highlights Deadly Downfall of Mission Creep.” Published in the September 2023 issue of ARMY magazine, AUSA’s flagship publication, the article describes how the battle—made famous by the book and subsequent movie, Black Hawk Down—has a legacy that remains three decades later, and how its lessons are relevant today as the U.S. Army prepares for large-scale combat operations.

In Bipolar General, Martin writes about his journey with undiagnosed mental illness and how it affected his Army career. He provides a first-hand look at available treatments for bipolar disorder, discusses why his condition was undiagnosed for so long and explores what can be done in the military to diagnose and treat service members who may be grappling with mental illness.

The AUSA Book Program “offers quality books about Army heritage, military theory and policy, and security in the modern world” and aims to “foster an understanding of the emerging security environment,” according to the AUSA website.

Its Distinguished Writing Awards program was established in 1997 to recognize authors who make a significant contribution to the scholarship on U.S. Army history.
